Barnard VT, chartered in 1761, was one of five towns named after the governor of the New Jersey and the Massachusetts Bay Colonies. Some say Sir Bernard’s strict enforcement of British rule fueled the Revolutionary War, and may explain why, around 1810 the town’s spelling changed. Others credit Samuel Topliff, town clerk, 1798-1828, with a spelling error changing Bernard to Barnard.
